Top Eight Thursday: 17 March 2011

1. James Blake – Limit To Your Love
2. The Apache Relay – Lost Kid (free download)
3. Bag Raiders – Castles In The Air
4. Noah and the Whale – L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N. (Fake Blood Remix) (free download)
5. James Blake – Give Me My Month
6. A-Trak – Me And My Sneakers (ft. Lupe Fiasco)
7. Bag Raiders – Shooting Stars
8. Yelawolf – Daddy’s Lambo

Listen here

I highly recommend copping both of those free downloads. The Apache Relay are a Nashville band that’s really going places, and Noah and the Whale and Fake Blood make a surprisingly good combination.

Top Eight Thursday: 24 February 2011

1. Arveene & Misk – Love & Lust
2. Toro y Moi – Still Sound
3. Das Racist – Swate
4. Darwin Deez – Bad Day
5. Chromeo – Hot Mess
6. Beastie Boys – Paul Revere
7. Mark Ronson and the Business Intl – The Bike Song
8. Arcade Fire – Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)

Listen here

Instead of listening to the songs I have been assigned to listen to, I spent last night going through a few pages of RCRDLBL, and this Arveene & Misk song was definitely one of my favorite finds. It’s a solid dancefloor banger, and it’s just very immediately catchy.

Top Eight Thursday: 27 January 2011

1. Chromeo – Fancy Footwork (Live from Montreal)
2. Bag Raiders – Sunlight
3. Kid Sister – Gucci Rag Top (ft. Gucci Mane)

Listen here

Can’t stop the dance! I’m really looking forward to hearing more from Theophilus London now that he has a record deal. This collaboration with half of Tegan and Sara is an interesting preview. Also, I don’t know where Yelle has been hiding, but the full album had better be out soon.

Top Eight Thursday: 16 December 2010

1. Foals – Total Life Forever
2. Chromeo – I Can’t Tell You Why (The Eagles cover)
3. Vampire Weekend – Fight For This Love (Cheryl Cole cover)
4. Foals – Spanish Sahara
5. Das Racist – I’m Up On That (ft. Homeboy Sandman)
6. Cold War Kids – I’ve Seen Enough
7. Sleigh Bells – Infinity Guitars
8. Major Lazer – When You Hear The Bassline

Listen here

I haven’t totally dug into it yet, but I’m regretting not listening to Foals’ Total Life Forever sooner, it’s a great album. Vampire Weekend covered “Fight For This Love” for Live Lounge today, and I would be lying if I said I hadn’t spent a significant part of this afternoon watching Girls Aloud videos and remembering how much I enjoy them. I had the pleasure of seeing Cold War Kids at Third Man Records on Sunday, and the new stuff sounds great.

Top Eight Thursday: 14 October 2010

1. Treasure Fingers – Cross The Dancefloor (Chromeo remix)

8. Mark Ronson & The Business Intl – Bang Bang Bang (ft. Q-Tip and MNDR)

Listen here

This might just be the culmination of the slow-burning Fool’s Gold love I started developing when the Kid Sister album finally came out.

Shh, don’t tell anyone it’s actually Friday.

Top Eight Thursday: 16 September 2010

1. Chromeo – I Could Be Wrong (ft. Ezra Koenig)
2. Kisses – Midnight Lover
3. Chromeo – Night by Night
4. Summer Camp – Ghost Train
5. Kisses – Kisses
6. Ra Ra Riot – Massachusetts
7. Summer Camp – Jake Ryan
8. Kanye West – Monster (ft. Bon Iver, Rick Ross, Nicki Minaj, Jay-Z)

Listen here

My flavor of the month and my flavor of the year teamed up, so of course that’s number one. As per “Midnight Lover,” I would like to take them all out for a nice steak dinner, though I’m pretty sure I’ve read that Mssrs. Macklovitch and Koenig are meat-free and I’m also trying to cut down my carbon footprint. I’m late to the Summer Camp bandwagon, but that’s better than missing it completely.

Top Eight Thursday: 1 July 2010

1. Das Racist – “Fake Patois”
2. Kid Sister – “Right Hand Hi”
3. Das Racist – “Nutmeg”
4. Katy Perry ft. Snoop Dogg – “California Gurls (MSTRKRFT Remix)”

6. Kid Sister ft. Kanye West – “Pro Nails”
7. Local Natives – “Sun Hands”
8. Local Natives – “Airplanes”

A wish I could use right now would be for more Local Natives in my life.

Top Eight Thursday: 10 June 2010 – Goal! England

1. Free Energy – “Bang Pop”
2. We Are Scientists – “Goal! England”
3. Das Racist – “Shorty Said (Gordon Voidwell Remix)”
4. The Hood Internet – “Rude Baptism (Rihanna vs. Crystal Castles)”
5. Vampire Weekend – “Jonathan Low”
6. Sleigh Bells – “Infinity Guitars”
7. Das Racist – “Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell”
8. M.I.A. – “XXXO”

Listen here.

This has been a weird week, apparently. If you’re shopping around for a summer jam, “Bang Pop” is an effortlessly catchy contender. I listened to “Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell” a couple of times when it became a meme, but never really gave much thought to Das Racist until I saw a couple of Tumblr posts about “Shorty Said” and decided to try listening to more of their work. In an odd, patchy way, I’ve slowly been getting into more hip hop this year.

We Are Scientists consistently prove themselves to be some of the funniest guys in music. In celebration of the World Cup and forthcoming album Barbara, they’ve recorded a football anthem that is available free here.

Top Eight Thursday: 22 April 2010

Listen here

1. Hot Chip – She Wolf (Shakira cover)
2. Vampire Weekend – Diplomat’s Son
3. The Morning Benders – Promises
4. The Clash – Clampdown
5. The Specials – Little Bitch
6. Vampire Weekend – California English
7. The Very Best – Warm Heart of Africa (feat. Ezra Koenig)
8. Sleigh Bells – Ring Ring

Been in a ska mood, apparently. Unexpected covers, such as Hot Chip’s recent rendition of “She Wolf,” never get old.
